Andre-Pierre Gignac gets devastating news after squad announcement

Andre-Pierre Gignac has been left out of the France squad that will play a World Cup qualifier against Sweden and a friendly against the Ivory Coast later this month.

The news comes as no real surprise — Gignac has not reached his own high standards in the second half of this season and has not scored a goal since the 2-1 win over Puebla in Jornada 9.

In many ways, it’s good news for the club. Even when he has been in the squad, he hasn’t been given many minutes in recent games. His omission means he won’t have to travel to the other side of the world and will instead have two weeks of rest and recovery ahead of the most important part of the season.

Here’s the France squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Hugo Lloris (Tottenham), Steve Mandanda (Crystal Palace), Alphonse Areola (Paris St Germain).

Defenders: Sebastien Corchia (Lille), Lucas Digne (Barcelona), Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal), Layvin Kurzawa (Paris St Germain), Adil Rami (Sevilla), Raphael Varane (Real Madrid), Djibril Sidibe (Monaco), Samuel Umtiti (Barcelona).

Midfielders: Adrien Rabiot (Paris St Germain), N’Golo Kante (Chelsea), Blaise Matuidi (Paris St Germain), Dimitri Payet (West Ham), Paul Pogba (Manchester United), Moussa Sissoko (Tottenham).

Forwards: Kingsley Coman (Bayern Munich), Ousmane Dembele (Borussia Dortmund), Nabil Fekir (Lyon), Kevin Gameiro, (Atletico Madrid), Olivier Giroud (Arsenal), Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid).
