Jornada 1 is behind us, and that means it’s time to take a look at how the UANL Fuerzas Basicas did over the weekend. All teams are beginning a new season, except the Tercera Division squad, who are currently on break between weeks 17 and 18. With that out of the way, let’s jump right into it:
The reserve team defeated Mineros de Zacatecas 3-1 over the weekend primarily thanks to two goals from Brian Rubio. Rubio scored 10 goals during the Apertura and has emerged as a candidate for a call-up to the senior team not far down the line. Daniel Elizondo scored the other goal for Los Felinos.
The Sub 20 squad, perhaps the most important farm team of all, comfortably won 2-0 against Santos Laguna on Saturday afternoon. Jesús Delgado and top prospect Jhonatan Aranda were the goalscorers. Aranda scored 14 goals for the U20 side during the 2015-16 season, but is coming off a rough Apertura. Both Aranda and Delgado are nearing 21 years of age, so this will be the true deciding season on whether they can crack it at the top level. Julian Quiñones dressed with the senior team and has presumably graduated from the U20 level for good.
Tigres U17 drew 1-1 with Santos in their opening match, with the all-important goal netted by Manuel Villanueva. Manuel broke out onto the scene this past Apertura, scoring four goals and getting double-digit starts (10) for the first time in his career. Team captain and prospect Bryan Reyes put in the full 90 minutes at center-mid.
As stated previously, the Third Division side are in between Jornadas 17 and 18 at the moment and thus didn’t play this weekend. They currently sit in 6th place in Grupo XII (18 teams total) with 33 points, and have won their previous two matches 4-0. The top scorers thus far are David Ayala (7 goals), Adrián Garza (5 goals), and Francisco Castañeda (5 goals).
