Things continue to head south for Tigres, as the team lost their second consecutive game, this time to Toluca. Fortunately, we saw mostly positive results down on the farm this weekend, including one particularly impressive showing. In fact, the four major Fuerzas Basicas teams went unbeaten this jornada. Here’s a detailed look at each game:
Tigres Premier played out a 0-0 draw against Santos Laguna. Obviously it was a quiet game, as have all of Santos’ games this season. The Laguñeros have only conceded once this year, so it’s understandable that Tigres failed to find the net. Tigres are still undefeated (2W-2D-0L) and are in 4th place in Grupo 1, with a game in hand over a few teams. This was Tigres Premier’s first clean sheet of the year, having conceded exactly once in each of the previous 3 games.
The result of the weekend was definitely the Sub 20 boys’ 5-0 thrashing of Toluca. That makes 4 wins out of 5 for the young felinos, and puts them in a tie for first place with Rayados. The result of the game was never in doubt, as Jhory Celaya put Tigres ahead after just 22 seconds. The team never looked back, and piled on more goals from Rafael Durán (22′), Luciano Augusto (29′), Damian Torres (39′), and Durán again (85′). Durán has been a consistent scorer over the past few seasons, and has 3 goals in 4 games this year. Luciano Augusto, the new kid who is now one of the top prospects in the system, scored his second of the year, albeit from a penalty.
The Sub 17s were coming off a fantastic game against Jaguares last week, but had their work cut out for them against Toluca. The boys managed a 2-2 draw in what turned out to be a very strange match. Toluca opened the scoring with an own goal, putting Tigres ahead at the half. The Red Devils equalized in the 79th minute, only for Manuel Villanueva to quickly strike back two minutes later. Celebrations ensued, but were quickly doused when Toluca equalized again in the 84th minute, and saw out the game for a 2-2 draw. Last week the U17 team showed impressive stamina, outlasting Jaguares over 90 minutes, but this week they seemed to fall off as the final whistle drew nearer. Manuel Villanueva, the goalscorer, hadn’t scored since Jornada 1.
The 3a team had a fantastic result on Sunday afternoon, edging out Saltillo by a score of 2-1. Of course, no team in the Tercera Division has much name recognition, but Saltillo are one of the top sides in Grupo XII, and Tigres managed to beat them away from the comforts of San Nicolás. Omar Doria scored a brilliant header off a corner kick to open the scoring for Tigres in the 8th minute. That lead was doubled in the 20th minute by Adrián Garza. Just before halftime, Saltillo earned a penalty and were able to pull it back to 2-1 after they converted. There was no scoring in the second half, and Tigres saw out the match to earn a big 3 points in their chase for a spot in the liguilla de filiales. Los Felinos are currently 3rd in Grupo XII.
