Another possible location has been put forward for our new stadium.
With the grandiose idea of building a new ground over the top of the Santa Catarina now seemingly dismissed as fantasy (Hurricane Alex, anyone?!), attention has turned to some altogether more realistic plots.
The leading contender at the moment seems to be the old railway tracks that lie behind El Palacio Sultan – the home of Monterrey’s baseball team and Tigres’ neighbor.
Government and UANL join forces?
Rogelio Garza Rivera, President of Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, said he had asked for a feasibility study of the land.
“I asked for a drone to do a flyover of the land for the project so we could assess the feasibility of putting a stadium back there,” he claimed.
“There is enough land, I think there are a lot of possibilities.”
The local government is reportedly keen on the idea. They want to include state of the art facilities, shoppings malls, and hotels as part of the development. The project would cost around $300 million.
Let’s hope this moves forward quickly – we’re badly in need of extra capacity at El Volcan.
