The second full season of the new Liga MX Femenil is about to commence, and Las Tigresas will be looking to improve upon their semifinal finish from the Apertura. This team performed spectacularly all season long, but had a bit of a disappointing showing in the semifinal against Pachuca. Though they didn’t go down without a fight, a 4-0 road loss in the first leg was enough to see them knocked out of the playoffs.
What to Expect
But, it’s a brand new season, and the future is still very bright for this team. The stars are all coming back, including Carolina Jaramillo, Blanca Solís, Katty Martínez, and Belén Cruz, who all scored at least 7 goals last season. This team scored 51 goals during the 14-game regular season, and conceded just seven. They were the very definition of dominant. Sure, there are some very dangerous teams alongside Tigres in Group 2 (Chivas and Rayados), but we saw last season they are beatable, especially when Tigres play at home. Which brings me to my next point…
Tigres were one of the better supported teams in the league, particularly when the men’s and women’s teams played back to back at El Volcán. Much like the men’s side of Liga MX, there has proved to be a lot of hostile crowds and home field advantage can be a huge boost to a team. In the biggest game of the year, the semifinal second leg against Pachuca, the ladies drew nearly 15,000 and had the crowd going nuts after they took a 3-0 lead by the 65th minute. Although Tigres couldn’t quite finish the comeback, El Volcán was definitely jumping.
There’s only one goal for a team of this caliber, and that’s a title. It certainly won’t be easy to even make it to the liguilla in the competitive Group 2, but Tigres definitely have the talent to take on any team in the league. Between the success of the men’s team, the Auténticos American Football team, and now Tigres Femenil, the UANL brand has become one associated with athletic excellence, and a this team should be shooting for nothing but the best results.
So, if you haven’t jumped on the Liga MX Femenil wagon yet, welcome aboard! The league was a great success in its first season and is a ton of fun to watch, and it’s very easy to start supporting Tigres if you’re already attached to the men’s club.
