Controversial referee appointed for Toluca vs Tigres

Luis Enrique Santander will take charge of a Tigres match for the first time since his disastrous performance in 2017 Clausura final when we travel to Toluca this weekend.

Santander missed a clear penalty when Jair Pereira fouled Ismael Sosa in the final seconds of last year’s showpiece. A goal for Tigres would have forced the match into extra time.

Last week, former World Cup referee Arturo Brizio claimed the outcome of the final would have been different if VAR was available. Tuca has also come out in favor of the technology.

A few days later after Brizio’s comments, Alejandro Rodríguez said he hoped Santander would never be in charge of a Tigres game again, adding that the loss against Chivas still hurt.

In the aftermath of the match, Santander admitted his mistake. He was dropped from the refereeing roster for the Apertura opener and didn’t take charge of a Chivas match until the team’s game against Queretaro in week seven of the Clausura.

Kickoff against Toluca is at noon on Sunday.
