With kickoff in tonight’s Tigres vs Cruz Azul clash just a few hours away, we take the chance to look back at the last time the two clubs met.
After winning the 2016 Apertura title and the 2014 Copa MX, as well as reaching the final of the 2015 Apertura, the 2016 CCL, and the 2015 Copa Libertadores, the 2016 Clausura was a largely forgettable tournament.
We looked tired and overplayed. Players such as Joffre Guerron and Cacha Arevalo had been moved on, the defence looked shaky, and we were in a state of transition.
Liguilla on the Line
The Cruz Azul game marked the final match of the regular season and was a winner-takes-all affair. The victors would head into the Liguilla, the losers would be left to rue what might have been.
We showed no sign of nerves as Sobis put us ahead inside 15 minutes. Gignac made it two ten minutes later, and the Frenchman added a second with a quarter of an hour remaining to make sure of the points.
Sadly, there would be no happy ending. We were paired with Monterrey in the Liguilla and they promptly beat us 4-3 on aggregate.
What are the chances of another 3-0 win tonight? Let us know in the comments.
