Edwin Cardona stokes tensions ahead of Clasico Regio

The Clasico Regio against Monterrey is still a week and a half away, but that’s not stopped Rayados midfielder Edwin Cardona from adding fuel to the already simmering rivalry.

The 24-year-old Colombian knows his side could book their place in the Liguilla with a win against Toluca this weekend, but he insists he’d prefer to wait until the Clasico. He hopes a win for Rayados in the derby could simultaneously cement Monterrey’s place in the post-season and end our already slim chances.

“Getting to Clasico having already qualified [for the Liguilla] would be an important step,” he said. “But we’d still have the goal of winning it because it would be great to knock Tigres out. It would be a beautiful game.”
