It will be the highest level showdown of the weekend when Tigres clash with league-leaders Toluca on Sunday afternoon. Both sides have more or less secured a spot in the playoffs, but the advantages of the higher seed have proven to be worth the effort in the past.
Tigres are fresh off a dominating 4-1 victory over León in what was probably our best performance of the year. We got out to an incredibly hot start, scoring all four goals in the first half and blowing La Fiera out of the game before it even got going. This varied attack was impressive: Valencia, Carioca, Aquino and Sosa all got on the scoresheet. It shows how many dangerous players we have that Gignac wasn’t even involved in the four goal outburst.
Toluca, who are the current superlíders, are riding quite the hot streak at the moment. The Diablos have won ten straight games in all competitions, including six in the league. They just squeezed past Zacatepec on penalties Wednesday night in the Copa MX semifinal to keep the streak going.
Expect a rowdy atmosphere: Toluca have played five straight matches on the road and no doubt the fans will be excited for this homecoming. Add the Sunday afternoon heat on top of that, and Tigres will be in for quite the fight. In our other afternoon game this season against Pumas, the team looked sluggish and unimpressive.
One last thing to talk about is the official. Our old friend, Luis Enrique Santander, will be in charge of the game. Luis of course was the official during the controversial Clausura final a year ago.
